MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte devoted a part of his last State of the Country Deal with (SONA) to tirades versus media and leisure business Abs-CBN Corp., which his administration stripped of its general public frequencies for its no cost Television set and radio operations in 2020.
Abdominal muscles-CBN News fact-checks Duterte’s promises about the network in his 2021 SONA.
DUTERTE Claims Network ‘CHEATING’ ON TAXES
Extra than an hour into his tackle, Duterte alleged the network has not been shelling out the appropriate taxes.
“They are dishonest authorities by the billions in taxes and they continue to want the frequency due to the fact ‘yan ang pinapag-awayan. I will give it to a Filipino na gustong gumawa ng tama and shell out, since ‘yung sa Abdominal muscles-CBN, even their gear had been imported tax-free. Kaya talaga hindi ako papayag, they however owe authorities billions,” Duterte claimed.
According to Duterte, what Abdominal muscles-CBN has been shelling out for in property taxes is primarily based on 4 hectares when it must as an alternative be shelling out for a 40-hectare house.
“They are spending 4 hectares in property taxes. But they are supposed to be occupying 40 hectares for that complicated there,” he stated, evidently referring to the Abdominal muscles-CBN compound in Sgt. Esguerra Ave./Mom Ignacia St., Quezon Town.
Stomach muscles-CBN’s compound in Quezon Metropolis, however, is only 4.4 hectares.
Bureau of Interior Earnings (BIR) officials who testified in the congressional franchise hearings last calendar year cleared the community of tax delinquencies, which contradicts Duterte’s claims.
They said the community has been “on a regular basis paying its company taxes for the past a long time,” remitting about P15.3 billion in taxes from 2016 to 2019.
“There (are) no remarkable delinquent accounts as we communicate,” BIR Assistant Commissioner Manuel Mapoy reported in the listening to.
Abs-CBN main financial officer Ricardo Tan also testified that the network paid P164 million in 2018, adding that the business has consistently paid out its company taxes.
Tan stated that from 2003 to 2019, the Abs-CBN Team of organizations (which includes Abs-CBN Corp.) paid out a complete of P71.5 billion in taxes.
Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate reported the BIR’s statements during the franchise hearings are opposite to what Duterte said on Monday.
“Binanggit niya kanina ulit yung concern ng Abs-CBN, he yet again repeated this prolonged-debunked lie that Ab muscles-CBN cheats on its tax tasks or payments. Malinaw naman nung nagkaroon ng pagdinig sa Kamara, even the BIR ang nagsabi walang tax dues o hindi nabayarang buwis ang Abdominal muscles-CBN.”
“At kahit doon sa kaniyang sinabi na 40 hectares, ilang beses na rin akong nakabalik diyan sa Stomach muscles-CBN ni hindi nga umabot ng 4 ektarya yan, that’s only I believe 3.8 hectares so tama yung binanggit na spreader ng misinformation faux information at lies ang huling SONA ni Pang. Duterte,” he stated.
‘NO PROBLEM’ WITH Abs-CBN?
Duterte claimed he “experienced no difficulty” with the community.
“Nilamon ko lahat ‘yon simply because I did not want to be vindictive,” he explained, referring to the issue of political advertisements in the 2016 presidential elections.
Having said that, in an ambush interview in 2017, Duterte mentioned he would block the renewal of the network’s franchise for allegedly accepting funds for his marketing campaign ads that it failed to air prior to the 2016 polls. He also mentioned that Abs-CBN failed to return the funds.
In 2019, Duterte also threatened that the community would no lengthier be on the airwaves, including that it must not assume its franchise to be renewed.
On July 10, 2020, his allies in the Property of Reps killed Ab muscles-CBN’s franchise application.
In a Senate listening to on Abs-CBN’s franchise in February 2020, Stomach muscles-CBN’s CEO Carlo Katigbak clarified that all the countrywide political advertisements of Duterte in the 2016 elections ended up aired but some of his regional adverts truly worth P7 million could not be accommodated.
He explained all-around P4 million was refunded to the Duterte camp but that the community was “delayed” in supplying again the remaining P2.6 million in advert money. The quantity “was no more time approved by the President,” he reported.
“On this concern, we accept our shortcoming in our failure to release the refund in a timely fashion,” Katigbak reported.
DUTERTE-CARPIO TAGGED AS DRUG TRAFFICKER?
Duterte alleged that Abdominal muscles-CBN revealed “garbage” about his daughter, Davao Town Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, for supposedly reporting that she was a drug trafficker.
Duterte was very likely referring to the “Ang Totoong Narcolist” collection of films uploaded in 2019 by a whistleblower named “Bikoy” and was documented by a lot of media retailers, not just Ab muscles-CBN.
Bikoy, later recognized as Peter Joemel Advincula, tagged Duterte-Carpio’s husband for alleged “tara” or grease revenue, which the Duterte relatives has denied.
Bikoy also alleged in the video clips that Honeylet Avanceña, Duterte’s partner, had been receiving cash from drug syndicates as a result of a financial institution account underneath the name of their daughter Kitty.
Abs-CBN did not publish any report tagging Duterte-Carpio or Kitty as drug traffickers, but it did publish the Dutertes’ denials.
The network’s shutdown has been labeled by various teams as politically enthusiastic and an attack on push independence by the Duterte administration.
The closure of its totally free Television set and radio broadcast resulted in the retrenchment of hundreds of Abs-CBN personnel, which includes overall models, compounding the much-reaching effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
Despite the crippling results of its franchise denial, Ab muscles-CBN has ongoing its public assistance applications and the generation of leisure titles.
